About Us
Our dogs live at Scenic Valley Farm (SVF) in rural SW Wisconsin. The spend time inside and outside. In the summer time the doors to the screened in porch are open most of the time so they can come and go. They like to play outside much of the time. The come inside when they’re cold, tired, hungry and want attention.
They like to play with our neighbors english springer spaniel. With me they go for daily hikes over the meadows and through the woods. They do not hunt but live to chase criters, rabbits, deer, turkey, etc. Louie loves to swim and Sammy explores the shoreline. Here is Sammy’s first litter in August 2022 and second litter, July 4 2026.

These two dogs got together and decided to have pups, Sammy and Louie. Sammy, on the right in the pic is the mother is now, 7.15.26, almost 6 years old and Louie on the left is now almost 11 years old. Sammy’s first litter (pic above on the right) of pups are where born on February 20th 2022 and her second litter on July 4th 2026. The mother is tri-color and the father is liver and while. Both are English Springer Spaniels and are AKC registered. The liters are registered with the AKC. They have been the best of friends since I got Sammy as a pup. The pile Sammy & Louie are standing in front of is a SVF R&D project to develop organic compost in 30 days.
You visit the farm, Scenic Valley Farm, in rural Readstown and they will come running to greet you.
We have had English Springer Spaniels for 17 years and the first spaniel I got was Gunner, a liver and white(see pic below). He was my best friend. He passed away in June of 2020. Eleven years ago I got Louie to keep company with Gunner. I got Sammy for Louie’s companionship and to breed with Louie. I decided in my retirement to let Sammy have a liter of pups a year. When my four kids where growing up we had labs and retrievers. After the kids left the nest my son told me I needed a dog to walk me. I described a neighbor’s dog I used to play with all the time when I was a kid, Spot was his name. I did not know what kind of dog it was. My son went on the internert to look and found a English Springer Spaniel that fit my description. We located a breeder south of where we lived and picked up Gunner.
This liter is Sammy’s second litte. Our plan was to have Sammy to have one liter a year. But best laid plans of men don’t always work out. Louie was always interested but he could not catch up with Sammy. Until one late nite on May 3rd after midnight Sammy came into the house bouncing off the walls and Louie came in “smoking a cigarette”. Then 63 days Sammy’s second litter, 4 boucing pups, 2 girls and 2 boys. At 5:30 on July 4th the first one literaly bounced of the floor as Sammy was running outsisde. She made a nest in the dirt under the porched. I had to crawl on my belly to pull out and lead her to the whelping box, 4×8, that I built for. Within four hours she had the remaining 3 pups.
The springer is bred to be a bird hunting dog. They are great family dogs, super friendly and very devoted. “The definition a type of spaniel was bred, the ancestor of some of our modern spaniels, that would naturally crouch when it located game. Used in similes and metaphors as a symbol of devotion or obsequiousness.” Of all the dogs I have had for the past 50 years these spaniels make the best companions and family dog.
English Springer Spaniels Requirements:
My concern is the following. an English Springer Spaniel future activity level needs to be geared towards activity. This is what AI says and I agree with it: English Springer Spaniels can live in houses in the city or apartments, but they need a lot of daily exercise and attention. Because they have high energy and love to work, small spaces can be hard for them unless you commit to long walks and play times every single day.
Apartment ChallengesHigh Energy: They need at least one to two hours of hard exercise daily to stay calm indoors.Noisy Barking: Opinions on A-Z Animals indicate that these dogs love to bark at outside noises, which can upset apartment neighbors.Messy Habits: They often dunk their whole face in their water bowls and track dirt inside from walks.Lack of an “Off Switch”: They were bred to hunt all day, so they may pace or get restless in a small room without mental puzzles.
There are things can do but it takes your time:
Daily Outings: Walk, run, or visit a local dog park to let them burn off physical energy.Brain Games: Use puzzle toys, lick mats, and obedience training to tire out their smart minds.Crate Training: Set up a safe, quiet crate or pen so they have a cozy spot to rest.To help you decide if this is the right fit, you can read user discussions and tips on the Reddit Springer Spaniel Community.
I live on a 30 acre farm, the door is always open. So Sammy and Louie come and go but stay on the property. The dogs are the ultimate companion dogs so they stay close. Even living on a farm with untethered outside access I maked an effort every day summer and winter to take them for a walk and/or swim. It will do you good, also. Like my son says Dad you need a dog to walk you.
Availability
All puppies from Sammy’s & Louie July 4th litter have found homes.
They are going to their forever home the week of Sept 1.
In general puppies can be picked up at 8 weeks, no earlier. Call and schedule a date and time to pick up. Sometime the the beginning of September. There is a non refundable $500 deposit on the pup. Send payment via cash, Venmo or other online paymeny payable to Gunner Spaniel. Thank you.
Health & Wellness
The puppies will have front declaws removed, tails docked, dewormed. When purchasing a puppy you will receive Vet letter certifying complete with shots (Distemper, parvovirus). We also performed genetic/DNA testing on the parents, which is available upon request. Also the current litter (7.4.2026) has been AKC registered. Which means the pups can be AKC registered for things such as AKC Shows and/or breed (AKC). (Full Registration)

The Puppies

Their third week. Alot happenned:
Monday July 27 – the pups opened their eyes, Tuesday they stood up, I noticed sharp teeth and cat like claws, on Wednesday they started playing, on Thursday they started to run but falling alot. On Friday I loaded them in my truck and with Sammy and Louie took a road trip to the Twin Cities to see my kids and grand kids (Maya, Jett, Talas and Olivia). On the way back Monday Aug 3, we stopped at Pettibone Park in La Crosse to play in the sand on the beach and experience water waves. Here are some recent photos and below are the videos. Their forth week we will begin the weaning process. Last week the puppies were interested in Mom’s food. So time to start on sold food. We will blend Mom’s puppy food, Iam Puppy food w chicken, with water and a little cooked oatmeal.

Monday August 5th. I have begun weaning the pups with a gruel of Sammy’s Iams Puppy Food blended with water. But every other meal they get Sammy’s milk.
Monday Aug 5th the puppies had their first solid food, Iam Puppy food blended with water into a gruel. They went to it and lapped it down. Even though they had water available they washed it down with some of Mom’s milk. See below for video.

August 10th, 5 weeks plus 2 days. The puppies ate dried puppy food mixed with a little water. They ate from a 6 cupcake pan. One cupcake for each puppy plus two extra. For all practical purpose they are weaned.

On August 13 in the morning before their breakfast I took this pic of the pups sleeping on a cushion in the whelping pen. They barely fit the cushion because they have grown so much.

August 16th:
Aug 21st – I gave the pups and parents chew sticks. To get away from the pups from stealing hers Sammy jumps into the pups sleeping pen.
My grand daughter made a very nice 12 inch cloth braided play toy. After 10 days of the pups playing with it, this how it looks, They really like it and still play with it!

For Sammy’s first litter, he played with the pups but I don’t remember what age they were. Now he is 4 years older, almost 11. This time he was letting the pups chase him.

The following pics were taken today, 3 weeks plus one day. As he ages the liver spots will grow, shrink, or move around. Last nite the pups were on the screen porch with adequate light for the scale, so I weigh them. Jett weigh 5.6#s. At birth he weigh 10 oz. Mom is doing a good job.
